Frida Kahlo de Rivera was a Mexican painter. She was born in 1907 and, when she was six years old, she contracted polio. The polio affected her left leg. In 1925, she suffered a serious accident – she was on a bus in Mexico City when it crashed. As a result, she broke many bones and had thirty-five operations. She was immobilised for months in a hospital bed. She abandoned the study of medicine and started to paint regularly. She painted many self-portraits. She said that she painted herself because she was often alone and knew herself very well. She spent the rest of her life in pain, but she was a very active woman, she painted more than 140 paintings before she died, at the age of 47.
